After the devastation of Hurricane Helene, we Floridians are now in the eve of another major storm. These weather events are new experiences to all, since the speed of development has increased to a rate that no one is used to. We can only prepare and wait. And pray.
With this focus on hopeful optimism while facing possible disaster, reflecting on Kathy’s poppy draws thoughts of how delicate yet tenacious life is. Red poppies commemorate the dead, particularly fallen soldiers. Yellow poppies are associated with more positive aspects, such as prosperity, friendship, and also remembrance. The side view of Kathy’s watercolor portrays the depths of what this flower represents. Focusing on the earthly, mundane facets of life, I see this flower as an offering of friendship, of love and generosity. This flower steps away from the sorrow of loss, while also honoring the fruits of all those sacrifices made.
The delicate hues
From earth, to gold, to sunlight
It is not red
